WHY Diamonds are Unique: Diamond is the Only gem formed by a single element CARBON

WHY Diamond is the hardest gem on Earth:

The condition under they formed are responsible of  their incredible hardness
(Only a Diamond can scratch another Diamond)

They formed under tremendously high pressure and temperature deep inside the Earth below the Crust and transported inside host rocks by blasts through the crust of the Earth by a process called  Emplacement. Not always the right combination of temperature and pressure is respected even the slight variation will end up in simple soft carbon.

In their trip to the surface they endured enormous stress and shocks few survived and even fewer are gem quality Diamond

WHY Diamonds are so valuable:

The value of a Diamonds starts building up from the Mining.

Most modern Diamond mining operation are large in scale and extremely expensive, it takes many years and Millions of Dollars to develop a Diamond Mine. For example the Argyle mine in Australia took Eight years exploration and 13 Million Dollars to find the Source and then an additional 420 Million Dollars over five years to develop the mine and begin Production.

It might require to move hundred of tons of rocks to recovery few carats of cuttable Diamonds
